I've sent off a complaint to the PCC regarding this mornings edition of the Express.
Please explain how you believe the Code of Practice has been breached. Which specific clause(s) of the Code are you complaining under?
"12 Discrimination i) The press must avoid prejudicial or pejorative reference to an individual's race, colour, religion, gender, sexual orientation or to any physical or mental illness or disability."
I believe that the Daily Express has contravened this clause of the code and are potentially inciting racial hatred with this headline, effectively branding all asylum seekers as "spongers".
Merk, do you have a higher quality version of the front page of todays DE, or know where I could get one? I'm required to send in a copy of the article to the PCC and I really would begrudge buying a copy unless I really had to...
You wont get anywhere. It says that Bombers are all spongeing asylum seakers. If the bombers were asylum seekers on benefits then there is nothing wrong with this. If they had said All asylum seakers are spongeing you would have a case. You are interpreting the front page as the latter, not the former, which is how it should be interpreted.
Would there be grounds for complaining about the accuracy of the headline? The bombers are not all asylum seekers (especially if you interpret the 'all' to include those from 7 July) and only two of the most recent bombers have been named and confirmed as asylum seekers. The other two may not be.
Nate - Anonymous has a point. You'll have to read the article in its entirety to find out. The headline is despicable, and clearly implies the vice versa, but it cunningly doesn't say it
After buying the rag and mulling it over, Anonymous may have a point, but nonetheless there's no harm in going ahead and sending it off. If nothing gets done (which I expect it probably wont) then, unfortunately I'll just have to live with it. But, rags like DM & DE can't go on publishing stuff like this, at the worst it's going to incite more bombings or riots (ie. bradford, etc.). Headlines like this do not go any way to helping our cause of trying to convince the world and the ethnic minorities that live in our country that we aren't a war mongering, hate peddling country that they should not respect.
Same Anonymous as before - read the article (at the shop - didn't buy the thing) and it makes no distinction.
It also has a lovely 'should all asylum seekers be turned back' poll attached.
(Am I the only one who's got the hump with the 'this is how they repay us' comment? As if it's the Mail and Express who have given them asylum instead of fighting for years to stop it).
In response to Nate, I complained under section 1 of the PCC code concerning Accuracy - the July 7th bombers were certainly not asylum seekers, and the most recent may not have been either
i do agree with red ken that all the world should go to england to achieve their full potential -- after all, only we, the master race, can enable the world to do this potential thing.
If we don't love the world to bits, it might not love us back and that would be a tragedy.

Tell me that was photoshopped and isn't the real front cover.
PLEASE.
It's real I'm afraid.
It's sad, isn't it, how pranksters have taken over the Express and made it nothing more than a ludicrous parody of the Daily Mail. :(
Again with the express, inciting racial hatred.
PCC, expect a letter from me.

I think if you were allowed to complain about the news being made up, the DE and DM would be alot thinner...

it does seem as though the DE has borrowed the Star's headline writers for the day
The Daily Hate Mail & the Daily Excess are clerly vying for the nastiest headline of the year.
What sort of individual likes to read this stuff and how does it influence their views ?
The DE & DM might just as well substitute the union flag with a Swastika.

Also, they can't even spell correctly. There's no E in sponging. (See Dictionary.com)
